Dear Parents and Students,
I would like to take this opportunity to tell you how excited I am for this school year to begin. While our band program has been successful in the past, I can already tell that this will be the best year yet for our members. Our band program has become one of the leading programs in our region during the last few years with performances at Columbus University and the University of Georgia. We have been recognized with the Exemplary Performance Award from the Georgia Music Educators Association; the highest award that a middle school band can receive. This year, we look forward to continuing our mission of "Building a Legacy of Leadership" through "Excellence, Determination, and Innovation."
This school year, we are proud to announce that our band will be participating in the Orlando Fest Band Clinic where our students will take lessons from some of the leading musicians in the band world. While in Orlando, we will have the opportunity to visit the Universal Studios parks and have a lot of fun. We look forward to seeing our students grow in such competitive events as District Honor Band, All-State Band, Solo and Ensemble, and Large Group Performance Evaluation. The number one goal of our staff is to give your student a World Class musical experience!
On the first day of school, your student should bring home the following items that require your attention:
1. Information about how to sign up for the band text message list. This is important to make sure you are always informed, even if your student may sometimes forget things.
2. Information about the 6th grade parent meeting and the Orlando Trip Meeting.
3. How to sign up for Edmodo, the online webpage where we assign student homework.
4. Finally, you will be able to join the BandAids, our Smokey Road Band Parent Organization.
5. Want to advertise your business or show your support for the band? Become a gold level sponsor and your business name will be on the back of our T-Shirts, a web link will be featured on our website, and your contact information will be listed in our fall concert program. The information will be coming home with your student during the first week of school.
In the meantime, let me assure you that your student is in the right place at the right time. This is a remarkable group of students that work together to make a difference in music, and ultimately across our community. I look forward to welcoming back our returning parents and students as well as making new friends with our brand new students and parents. See you soon!
Sincerely,
Dr. Joshua Boyd
Director of Bands
