The Smokey Road Wind Ensemble will make history again this year by becoming the first middle school band in Coweta County to be invited to perform at the prestigious University of Georgia Middle School Band Festival.
Directors Boyd and Satterfield have applied to perform as a guest band at the clinic for the past 3 years. "It is rather difficult to be invited," said Boyd, "Band's submit an extensive application which includes programs from 10 previous concerts as well as audio recordings. UGA then has a highly qualified panel listen to the recordings and comb through the programs to invite only the best bands in the state of Georgia to perform. Being accepted may be the highest honor our band has ever achieved. It is definitely a shining moment in our careers."
The UGA midfest clinic has thousands of participants from various bands across the state of Georgia. During two nights of the clinic, all students, their directors, administrators, and parents file into UGA's concert hall for a concert given by 3 or 4 bands. The idea is that the clinic participants are inspired to perform at the level that the students on stage have exemplified. Smokey Road Middle School Wind Ensemble has been invited to perform as one of these "clinic bands" that will perform in front of a packed auditorium as a shining example of what it means to be a top band in the state of Georgia.
There will be more information coming as well as a revised Wind Ensemble practice schedule. Students who are in the Wind Ensemble will travel to Athens and spend the day as a music performer at UGA. It is going to be a great experience.
